Interest‐based activities: In these peer‐based learning environments
we have been discussing, it is important to notice that kids are engaged in YouTube or Wikipedia because these sites offer specific ways to participate around interest-based activities. In the third chapter of the book, Patricia Lange discussing her research with YouTube. In her vignette on page 45, she discusses how “kids areincreasingly carrying around cameras in their day‐to‐day activities in ways that enable them to act, think, and later reflect more deeply on what has happened to them by manipulating and sharing everyday, recorded images.” She goes on to detail three different teens and their personal interests connected to their local community and global activities such as politics and war.

Anne Collier, an advocate for children and their online safety, argues, “We’re fearing and mourning what’s being lost a lot more than we’re seeking and considering what is being gained.” When we focus on what is being lost, we tend to miss the fact that as educators we must engage with students’ changing media knowledge and, most importantly, recognize how students’ experiences are (probably) fundamentally different from are own.

11:17 AM on Wednesday, February 16
We can't continue to have our students just look up answers on the Internet - it's the discussion, dialogue, and collaboration on the perspective and analysis of information.

"this is a very different outlook to have as a young person -- it changes our relationship to text and promotes a constant invitation to engage, contribute, and learn." Henry Jenkins via "Creating a New Education Mindset by Dr. Jessica K. Parker.

Texting does not damage the English Language, it is a new genre - it is quickness, efficient, and informal.

Kids playing games want to get better - what is wrong with that? This school turned curriculum integrated with gaming. Kids make games in the Systems course - how cool is this. Critical thinking at best. "Design Thinking" for kids - they grow up as Design Thinkers! Wow, this is 21st century learning.

What does learning, literacy, and knowledge look like in the 21st century? What does this look like in your school? We need to begin the conversation. We need the research to support our decisions. Study learning rather than education!

Learnings from Brain and Learning Conference, SF Notes from sessions

And if you ever have me present, I promise, (and always do) to have moments for reflection, sharing with others, and it will be ENGAGING and entertaining. It's important to include audience participation and never ever read your notes, talk fast, or just GIVE information.

I guess I'll share something ... when I was in the classroom, 20 years teaching Computer Applications and Computer Science (AP & HP), I always included an intro to programming in my Computer Applications class using Visual Basic. I presented this unit after testing in May. I shared with the kids, it's pass/fail. You experience it, you pass. You don't, you fail. I wanted to encourage the exploration. What happened was that each student left my class knowing what the heck programming was, what it looked like, what the potential was, how it's more than just writing code and appreciation for applications they were using. The results were amazing ... at least for me. Each class would result in 2-3 students that said, "Oh I like this, can I get more?" Yes, take my honors and/or AP course. And yes I had several students get 4's on the AP exam - much beyond my expertise - they were on their own. I simply guided their journey. I'm happy to see a little bit of encouragement over Twitter and in conference presentations such as by Marc Prensky today, but it's necessary to reconsider including programming back into our secondary classrooms. If not, they will all come from outside the USA.

03:33 PM
She conducted research on upper class kids in the Silicon Valley. Is this a representation of our students?

more comments ... Really? she is reading her notes??

03:13 PM
Comments by Jody ... not speaker ... A lot of talk about social media but what about ideas and strategies how? Don't forget about including the parents. Parents need to know what/how we are using social media in the classroom. It's an opportunity to provide skills and knowledge to the community as well as an opp to embrace what the student's already know and use.

DYN is a new school and after school network. She followed students for past six years. Now sharing a story on Jamal, 14 years old ... until 20 y.o. He taught her that he shared a sense of self, i.e. html engaged his creative self. He taught himself. He didn't graduate from HS because of poor grades. He now has launched a successful web business. He had a teacher who encouraged this self-direction.

03:10 PM
Next speaker, Dr. Brigid Barron - researching inquiry based learning, etc. etc. Digital Youth Network, Fusing Online Communities, school and home activities to develop new media literacy.

03:03 PM
www.cgreenhow.org and she is on twitter ... she was just OK - no pausing time for audience to reflect. Unfortunate that presenters don't practice what should be modeled to educators. We, as students, can't just sit and get!!!

02:38 PM
current supporting info on SNS - increased knowledge of socio-political and science areas, highly motivated to use. Public recognition and social reinforcements are key. Finding like-minded others is important for human connections.

02:35 PM
next steps ... research knowledge and interest, real world impact, and integration into today's classroom. It does encourage reading and writing in my opinion -- more than ever before.

02:26 PM
People need validation. Kudos. Comments for debate. People like to attract attention. Self-advertisement - "subscribe to my YouTube account" as well as for advocacy and interest development. Politics, trends, social movements. People see these connections. How do we incorporate this into school?

02:21 PM
There is an emotional and task-related support system that many otherwise could/would not have. Evolving support via school includes discussion on projects, homework difficulties. Students have opportunity to share stressful concerns about college, career, grades. Most receive support to their stress.

02:18 PM
People want SNS to strengthen identities, share ideas, advice on careers and colleges, consumer products. Students saw no relation to school. SNS provides the back drop of a self-styled statement. Past uses of bullying, meeting strangers has become more of authentic connections as they really want a foundation of "friends". It provides a platform that you can have in a day-to-day life. Opportunity to share different sides of yourself, business, community.

02:16 PM

Still some using MySpace, but not many, poll your students so you know. Poll your customers so you know. Get to know your "clients". It's about the people not the content. She talks of MySpace features but this author truly feels it's OUT.

Hot Dish is another Facebook like app ... Presenter's FB is Christine Greenhow. Currently not much research for education, however, what is happening currently that young people use? How do these practices align with those valued in formal education? How can we use these insights to advance designs and theory?

Calvin Klein will be showing in real time, runway shows for all to comment and guide the industry. 82% of teens online - future consumers. Social networking has beat out online gaming and PORN as the number one use of computers.

01:54 PM
This field is really young and insights to social media will be shared. More people last year went to Facebook than Google last year. Projected to reach many more every year. It's not just limited to race, economics.

Strategy, show pics/phrases/terms on the screen, have one student sit with the back and the other student describes until other student guesses correct response. Good for reviews.
